One more time on gridiron

Blaze's Martens, Lakers' Knutson to play in all-star game

Seniors Jackson Martens and Tyler Knutson still have one more game to play representing the high school football teams.

Jackson, from Burnsville, and Knutson, from Prior Lake, were selected to play in the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Tackle Cancer All-Star Football Game Dec. 3 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis at 3 p.m. Martens will play linebacker for the south squad, while Knutson will be a receiver.

This is the 44th year of the all-star game. To see complete rosters from the north and south, go to www.allstarfootball.org.

Eighty-eight seniors are selected to play in the game. For the seventh consecutive year, the game will be a north-south format.

Martens was a two-way threat for Burnsville this past season, helping the team to a 7-3 overall record. As a running back, he finished with 1,133 yards on 169 carries and nine touchdowns. Defensively, had 60 tackles and two interceptions.

As a junior, Martens helped the Blaze reach the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1995. He had 49 tackles and four interceptions on defense, along with 355 yards rushing and four touchdowns and 203 yards receiving and one score on offense.

Meanwhile, Knutson led the Lakers in receiving this past fall, helping the team to a 5-5 overall record. He finished the year with 46 catches for 649 yards and four scores. He also had a rushing touchdown. On defense as a cornerback, he led the team with four interceptions.

Knutson was also the Lakers' top receiver as a junior, finishing with 40 catches for 607 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Lakers are part the West Metro District South Division, which had eight players picked to play on the south squad, including three from Eden Prairie, two from Minnetonka and one each from Hopkins and Edina.

Burnsville is part of the East Metro District White Division, which had six players on the south team, including one each from Lakeville North, Farmington, Lakeville South, Eastview and Rosemount.
