Steph Olson took charge in the Burnsville football team's season opener Sept. 1.
The senior had two rushing touchdowns and two interceptions as the Blaze escaped Roseville with a 20-14 victory. Olson carried 18 times for 78 yards and three caught passes for 15 yards.
However, it was senior Jackson Martens who scored the game-winning touchdown. He scored from two yards out late in the fourth quarter to put the Blaze up 20-14.
Martens finished with 71 yards on 15 carries and added two catches for 35 yards. The Blaze rushed for 170 total yards, while senior quarterback Andrew Hanson went 8 of 17 passes for 93 yards in his first-career start.
Olson scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that tied the game at 6-6. Roseville led 14-6 at the break, before Olson struck again in the third quarter.
He scored from seven yards and Hanson added the two-point conversion run to tie things up heading into the final quarter.
Olson and Martens were both selected to KARE 11's preseason all-metro team on the defensive side of the ball as a linebacker and safety, respectively. They both were a big part of the Blaze's 9-2 team last year that earned its first state berth since 1995.
Burnsville will look to go to 2-0 when it faces Lakeville South in its home opener Sept. 9 in East Metro District White Division play at 7 p.m. The Cougars lost a on last-second pass in their opener, falling 19-14 at home to Cretin-Derham Hall.
