Jake Shepley's big plays sparked the Burnsville football team to its third straight win Oct. 7.
The senior scored two touchdowns, one on offense and the other on defense, while also recovering a fumble to set up a score in the No. 7-ranked Blaze' 35-0 home win over Eagan in East Metro District White Division play.
The Blaze (5-1 overall) forced four Eagan turnovers and got a combined 22 tackles from seniors Jack Hajduch (12) and Jared Shearer (10).
Burnsville is back on the field in Week 7 (Oct. 14) playing at No. 4 Rosemount in division play at 7 p.m. The Irish suffered its first loss in Week 6, falling 28-17 at home to Farmington.
The Blaze will end the regular season at home Oct. 19 versus Eastview (2-4) in division action at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, in beating Eagan, the Blaze finished with 193 yards rushing, including 153 on 20 carries from Jackson Martens. The senior had a 57-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put the Blaze up 14-0. He capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter with an 8-yard scoring run.
Martens has 444 yards rushing and five touchdowns in the last three games — 619 yards on the ground and seven scores for the season. He leads the team in rushing, while senior Steph Olson, who didn't get a carry against Eagan, has 417 yards on the ground and four scores through six games.
Shepley opened the scoring against Eagan, picking off a pass and taking it 20 yards for a touchdown. In third quarter, he recovered up a fumble at the 4-yard line and junior Tre Thomas scored one play later for a 21-0 lead.
Shepley and senior Isiaah Harston put the game away connecting on a 52-yard scoring strike in the third quarter for a 28-0 advantage. Harston started at quarterback for senior Andrew Hanson, who is out at least three weeks with a broken bone in his foot suffered in Week 5 at Farmington.
Harston completed just the one pass (1 for 4), but it was a game-ender. Thomas finished with 37 yards on the ground.
Shepley has 218 yards receiving and four touchdowns on the season to lead the Blaze. He also has a team-best four picks.
Defensively, Martens also had interception against Eagan, while Hajduch recovered a fumble. Hajduch, Shearer, senior Lucas Moreno and sophomore Kyle Atkinson each had a half sack.
Thomas added nine tackles, while Martens had six and senior Alex Garlington recorded five. Senior DeShawn Wallace, sophomore Marcus Shepley, Olson and Atkinson each chipped in three tackles.
